Dr. Walter Bourke – District V Superintendent of the Year

Dr. Walter D. Bourke was chosen by members of the Indiana Association of Public School Superintendents as the 2011 District V Superintendent of the Year.

Winners are chosen by other superintendents in their district who consider the qualifications and accomplishments of area colleagues.  This year’s competition also considered the candidates’ ability to exert instructional leadership using limited resources.  One of the six district winners will represent Indiana in the American Association of School Administrator’s National Superintendent of the Year program.

Bourke has been superintendent of Franklin Township Community School Corporation since 2006.  He previously served as assistant superintendent in Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation and worked in the MSD of Lawrence Township as the director of secondary education.

During Bourke’s tenure as superintendent the graduation rate at Franklin Central High School has increased from 70 percent to a projected 87 percent for 2010 and ISTEP passing rates have increased an average of 8.5 percent in both mathematics and language arts.

Bourke is a graduate of Indiana University and earned his master’s at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.  He earned his doctorate at Indiana University, Bloomington.
