ACA Update: Grievance and appeals
As of January 1, 2017, under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), a new federal law took effect requiring insurance carriers to send members any new or additional documentation they receive to support a claims appeal decision. In the past, this information was made available only when requested. Now carriers must send this information to the member after they get it. It may include medical records requested from a doctor and any other supporting data that’s used in the appeal decision.
Members are encouraged to login on to the Anthem, and on the Communication Preferences tab indicate if they’d prefer to receive documentation by email. Of course, members may choose what delivery method works best for them, but selecting email will give the member more time to review the documentation before the final decision on their appeal is made.
