Rae Ann Woodrow This year will be my 24th year teaching 7th grade ELA in Franklin Township, having served 14 years in the old middle school (now called the annex) and 9 years at Middle School East, where I was named Teacher of the Year in 2016. I grew up in Pontiac, Illinois and went to high school where my father was a teacher for 31 years. I attended Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, IL where I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, as well as a teaching license. I got married shortly after graduation and moved to Indianapolis with my husband. I then earned a Master’s degree in education from Indiana Wesleyan University. I have been married 25 years to my wonderful husband, Mark, who teaches math at Franklin Central High School. We have three children: Maddie, a junior at Franklin Central; Olivia, a freshman at FC; and Gavin, a seven-year-old rowdy second grader at Kitley. We have lived in Franklin Township for 25 years and are proud to call this community our home. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, being active in my church, going to concerts, reading, watching movies, going out to eat, exercising, and cooking. I am excited to join the West family and to work with an English/Language Arts department of amazing, dedicated teachers. The energy, enthusiasm, and devotion the West team pours into their students is inspiring and infectious. I can’t wait to make connections with students and their families, and to have a personal impact on each child that enters my classroom. Additionally, I am excited to be an integral part of the West family and to see for myself why “West is best!”

Natalie Parsons I grew up in Evansville and earned my teaching degree at IU in 2004. I've been teaching for 8 years now! I spent 2 years in Beech Grove teaching science and 6 years in Shelbyville teaching social studies. I have lived in Franklin Township for 6 years. My husband, Cody, and I have an amazingly funny little man, Miles, who just turned 1! In my free time I love to create music and practice my nail art. My husband is an FC grad, his mother teaches at Acton and I'm so excited to join my family in this wonderful corporation! I'm thrilled to be at West because West is Best! I can't wait to take my students through exciting STEM lessons and build a tech-savvy community of leaders!

Flashes, Here is a great opportunity to make a difference! Ava is the young lady who joined us for our Walkathon last year, and your efforts made sure she got to experience Disney for the first time via the Make a Wish foundation. Ava endured her 3rd open heart surgery recently. Her stay in the hospital has been a little rougher than anticipated, and she is settling in for a longer stay than everyone thought. Let's lift her spirits by sending as many well wishes as possible her way. I know she would be excited to hear from all the friends she made at the Walkathon. All the information you need is in the photo below. Thanks for making a difference in this young lady's life! Feel free to share!

The Indiana Department of Education announced the 2016 Advanced Placement (AP) Award Recipients. To be selected, schools must have at least 25 percent of their 2016 graduating class receiving a 3, 4, or 5 on an AP exam. “Research tells us time and again taking and passing AP courses prepares students for the rigors of the college classroom,” said Dr. Jennifer McCormick, Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction. “I am pleased with the dedication these schools and their educators have shown in providing a head start into higher education for their students. I applaud the success of each student who worked hard to study and pass their advanced placement courses and exams.” AP is a research-backed method to facilitate student participation and success through delivery of college-level courses and corresponding exams in the high school setting. Qualified students who pass AP courses enroll in college at higher rates than other groups of students, require significantly less remediation, and have higher average first year grade point averages and credit hours earned than other groups of students. For the 2015-16 school year, 11,904 graduating students passed at least one AP exam with a 3 or better. This is an increase of six percent over the year prior, and an increase of 114 percent in the past 10 years. An award ceremony took place on June 14, 2017, from 1:30-in the North Atrium of the Indiana Statehouse. Pictured with the Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction, Dr. Jennifer McCormick is Franklin Township Community Schools Interim Superintendent, David Shaffer, Indiana Representative Mike Speedy and Franklin Central High School Principal, Kevin Koers For a complete list of awarded schools, please visit: www.doe.in.gov/sites/default/files/news/ap_recognition_event.pdf.
