Bunker Hill is a Four Star School!

The Indiana Department of Education recently released a list of schools in the state that meet the criteria to be designated Four Star Schools based upon performance in 2010-2011. FTCSC placed four schools on that list, Acton Elementary, Bunker Hill Elementary, Mary Adams Elementary, and South Creek Elementary. While Acton Elementary was closed for 2011-2012, the students, teachers, administrators, and support staff responsible for this great success are still with us. IDOE lists the performance results for 2018 Indiana schools. One hundred seventy-three (173) of them have been designated Four Star schools. That places our schools among the top 8.6% in the entire State of Indiana. As best that I can count, there are 483 private, parochial, and charter schools in Marion County. Only nine (9) of them are Four Star Schools – seven (7) public schools and two (2) parochial. More than half of the Four Star public schools in Marion County are in Franklin Township! What’s more only ten (10) other school corporations in the state had more than three Four Star Schools.
I am so proud of the hard work of our students, families and staff. We have been diligent in our pursuit to become the best school in Indiana! We are well on our way!

Congratulations Mrs. England

Bunker Hill 2nd Grade Teacher
Wins Celebrate Science Essay Contest

The winner of the Celebrate Science Indiana (CSI) teacher essay competition around the topic “How do you
Celebrate Science with Students?” was Catherine England from Bunker Hill Elementary School for first place in the
K-5 Division. First place prize was an Apple IPAD 2 and a special invitation for her class to attend the CSI event on October 8, 2011, with CSI covering the cost of a bus to and from the event.

Mrs. England has been teaching in Franklin Township over 30 years and is currently a second grade teacher at Bunker Hill. It is because of her dedication to the students and families that she is so successful, and she certainly excels in the area of science. Other 2nd Grade teachers have adopted some of her lesson plans and a former student of hers, Gabe Foulk, now a 4th Grader, says “that he will always remember Mrs. England for her creative projects and the extra facts she always taught them about science and social studies.”

Attendees at the 2011 Celebrate Science Indiana event enjoyed a number of Science Presentations and discussions on three stages which included an inspiring presentation by astronaut Stephen K. Robinson. They also were able to participate in a range of fun, educational, hands-on activities at the numerous Exhibitor Booths. Teachers were offered professional development opportunities through a series of NASA Ignite! Workshops.

The Science Education Foundation of Indiana (SEFI) and the Indiana Academy of Science (IAS) each contributed $25,000 in seed money for the 2011 event and a number of additional sponsors contributed financially towards the 2011 event.
Catherine England, with her class and their parents, fully enjoyed this fun, educational opportunity. Congratulations Mrs. England on a job well done and an award well deserved!

Bunker Hill Elementary School welcomes Daisy!

Daisy and Martha

Daisy is our newest edition to Bunker Hill Elementary School.  She is an ICAN (Indiana Canine Assistance Network) trained facility dog.  At Bunker Hill we utilize Daisy and Martha in many ways:

  • They are great listeners when a child wants to read to a partner
  • They calm students in stressful situations
  • Both dogs can be used as rewards for students/classes with great behavior or improved academic progress
  • Students walk the facility dogs around the building when the child needs a sensory break.
