A Rebalancing Task Force representing the community, parents, teachers and administrators met throughout the 2013-2014 school year to discuss and provide options to our School Board regarding the growing student populations in our opened facilities. The most immediate concern was the limited space at South Creek Elementary for the 2014-2015 school year. The task force met throughout the year to create a plan that could be acted upon as growth continued. School Board members were provided with 2 options from the task force. From those options, the attached hybrid plan was created.

For 2014-2015, Step 1 was implemented. South Creek is able to accommodate space for 3 kindergarten classrooms. After those classrooms were full, kindergarten classes were opened at Adams Elementary to take additional South Creek students for one year. Some South Creek kindergarten students are currently shuttled to Adams Elementary for this school year.

Step 2 is currently being examined. At their September 22nd meeting, the School Board was provided with options to allow more space at South Creek Elementary by redistricting some subdivisions from South Creek to Adams Elementary. The School Board is collecting information in the coming weeks to help guide their decision. Subdivisions that are under consideration are those closest to Adams Elementary. Additional information will be collected for possible considerations to be made at the middle school level. For more information please read the attached Hybrid Plan and the Rebalancing Initiative Step 2 hand out.

Attention Parents: We were recently informed that a magnet was stolen off of daycare vehicle that is used to pick up children from three of our schools.  The daycare owner quickly informed law enforcement and contacted the school district.  We have alerted all of our school to ensure the safety of our students and our police will be taking extra safety precautions.   We alert you to take the same precautions and talk to your children about keeping themselves safe.  You can find a photo of the decal on the district website.

Constitution Day commemorates the formation and signing of the U.S. Constitution by thirty-nine brave men on September 17, 1787, recognizing all who, are born in the U.S. or by naturalization, have become citizens. Thompson Crossing 5th Graders are celebrating today by listening to either a judge or lawyer in their classroom! Thank you to the Marion County Judicial County for helping organize this. Channel 6 News was out today to film part of the event. We should be on the news between 5-6 pm on Channel 6!

All 1st grade students will have a vision screening done on Wed. Oct.1, through the generosity of Drs. Huffman, Rich and Potter, optometrists in Franklin Township. FT buses will transport students to and from the screening, held at Kitley Elementary School. 1st graders will be screened in accordance with IN law, using the Modified Clinical Technique, a group of tests designed to determine the presence of any vision difficulties. The four parts include visual acuity, eye muscle balance, retinoscopy, and ocular health. Good vision is essential to learning. Please contact the nurse at your child’s school for questions. On Tuesday, October 6th, the Marion County Health Dept. will be here to perform a vision screening. All 3rd and 5th graders, students who are new residents of Marion County, and children from other grades suspected of having vision problems will be screened. Thank you, Karen Kass School Nurse 860-4608

September 21-27, 2014 is Banned Books Week. Banned Books Week is a celebration of your Freedom to Read. As a reader, it is your choice to read from a manners of genres, ideas and viewpoints. According to the American Library Association, “A challenge is an attempt to remove or restrict materials, based upon the objections of a person or group. A banning is the removal of those materials. Challenges do not simply involve a person expressing a point of view; rather, they are an attempt to remove material from the curriculum or library, thereby restricting the access of others. As such, they are a threat to freedom of speech and choice.” (American Library Association) So stop by the FTMS East Media Center to celebrate your Freedom to Read!

The 6th and 7th grade Jam is tonight! We have sold over 300 tickets and expect to sell 100 more today. Below is the contents of an email we just sent out about tonight. Parents/Guardians: We are all set for our first Jam of the year. I wanted to send out a couple of pieces of information to make tonight a night to remember for all of our 6th and 7th graders. Drop-off: Students should be dropped off at door 25. Parents do not need to come in with their student, as parent and teacher chaperones will be there to greet students as they enter. THE EARLIEST A STUDENT WILL BE ALLOWED TO ENTER THE BUILDING IS 5:55 pm. Tickets: If students purchased tickets in advance we have their name on a master list. WE DID NOT ISSUE TICKETS. Those who have yet to purchase a ticket may get one at the door for $2 (cash or check). The Jam: We have a fun night planned! We will have a dodgeball tournament in the main gym (the winners get to play the teachers), basketball in the auxiliary gym, and music in the cafeteria. As you can see this is far from the dances we all remember. The concession stand will be open and we will have pizza and a full selection of candy and drinks for purchase. Supervision: We will have over 25 parent and teacher chaperones in the building to supervise our students. Pick-up: The jam will end promptly at 8:00. PLEASE DO NOT ENTER THE BUILDING TO PICK-UP YOUR CHILD. Chaperones will walk out of door 25 with students starting at 7:55. It is helpful to designate a spot in the parking lot for your child to look for you. If you have any questions feel free to give us a call. Thanks, Chase Huotari, Principal Franklin Township Middle School East 317-803-8100
